George Wilfred Mitchell Sr. was born on March 10, 1952 in Hazen, Arkansas, to George Henry (Bo) Mitchell and Rosa Marie Mitchell. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mary and Leslie Fields, Ezekiel and Harriet Mitchell, parents, George Henry and Rosa Mitchell, his brother, Francis Eugene Mitchell, and his wife of forty two years, Phyllis Ann Mitchell.
Wilfred graduated high school in 1970 at the top of his class. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. In 1973, he answered the call of duty and survived a tour in Vietnam, serving with honor at Da Nang Air Force Base, nicknamed "Rocket City". He would go on to serve in the Arkansas Army National Guard as a noncommissioned officer. After his time in the military, he pursued a career in health insurance, and he retired from Arkansas Blue Cross/Blue Shield in 2012.
In 1977, he married the love his life, Phyllis (Dunlap) Mitchell. They remained married until her passing in December 2019. He is survived by four children, Nicole, Tabitha, George Wilfred Jr., and Marcus (Latasha), and two grandchildren, Shelby and Myles.
Wilfred is also survived by the following siblings, Elaine Gilmore, Carolyn Ann (Kitty) Smith, Rose Thompson, Dale Roy Mitchell, Betty Powell, Michael Mitchell, Carol Smith, Derrick Mitchell, Paul Mitchell, Marie King, and Trudy Gilkey, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He loved his family dearly and they looked to him as a leader, confidante, and friend. He was also an honorary brother to his sister in law, Regina Hall.
Wilfred was an avid sports fan, especially the Arkansas Razorback football and basketball teams. He would spend time with his brothers and friends talking "sports". Football and basketball seasons were always exciting for him. He specifically enjoyed attending the Razorback basketball games with his family.
Wilfred lived a full life. He showered and spoiled his family as much as he could. His love and compassion will carry the family for years to come.
