Lennel Larry “Dooney” Woods Jr.

Lennel Larry Woods Jr. was born on July 1, 1965, to Lennel Larry Woods Sr. and Maggie Louise Hune. Affectionately known as “Dooney” by his family and close friends, Larry was a loving man whose life was filled with memorable moments, meaningful relationships, and a love for family, sports, and music.

On August 25, 2026, Larry renewed his hope and faith in Christ, finding comfort and assurance in his relationship with the Lord.

From an early age, Larry developed a great love for basketball. He attended Lonoke High School and was a member of the Class of 1982. A gifted athlete, Larry was a proud member of Lonoke's state championship basketball team. His talent and passion for the game later afforded him the opportunity to continue his basketball career at the University of Central Arkansas, where he played alongside future NBA legend Scottie Pippen. His years on the basketball court remained a special and memorable part of his life's journey.

Following his basketball career, Larry answered another call—that of service to his country. In 1987, he joined the United States Army, where he faithfully served for five years. His military service gave him the unique opportunity to live in Germany, experience another culture, and create memories that stayed with him throughout his life.

Beyond basketball and military service, Larry had a deep appreciation for music. Among his favorite artists was Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, whose music held a special place in his heart. And although Larry never played football himself, anyone who knew him knew exactly where his loyalty stood on Sundays—he was a die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan.

One of Larry's greatest blessings was being a father. He was the proud father of three children, affectionately known as Lil Larry, Shanell, and Cedes. His children were an important part of his life, and the memories they shared with their father will remain forever in their hearts.

Larry's earthly journey came to a close on September 2, 2026, at the John L. McClellan Memorial Veterans' Hospital. Though his passing brings sorrow to those who loved him, his life leaves behind a collection of memories that will continue to be treasured by his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lennel Larry Woods Sr., and a very special granddaughter, Kynsley Wyrick.

Larry leaves to cherish his memory his loving mother, Maggie Hune of Sherwood, Arkansas; one son, Lennel Larry Woods III of Lawton, Oklahoma; two daughters, Shannel Woods of Lawton, Oklahoma, and Mercedes Woods of Lonoke, Arkansas; three brothers, Timothy Woods of North Little Rock, Arkansas, Walter Hune of Lonoke, Arkansas, and Tavares Hune of Little Rock, Arkansas; and his sisters, Yulanda (Douglas)Woods of Sherwood, Arkansas, Lashunda Woods of North Little Rock, Erica Hune of North Little Rock, Arkansas, Latoya Hune of Maumelle, Arkansas, Laconstance Hune of Conway, Arkansas, and Tamela Hune of North Little Rock, Arkansas.

He also leaves a beautiful legacy through ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two uncles; seven aunts; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and dear friends, including one very special cousin, Rodney Simmons.

Larry—“Dooney” to those who knew and loved him best—will be remembered for the life he lived, the experiences he shared, his love of basketball and music, his devotion to his favorite Steelers, his service to his country, and, above all, the family and friends whose lives were touched by his presence.

Though his earthly season has ended, the memories of Lennel Larry “Dooney” Woods Jr. will continue to live in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

His life was a gift.

His memory is a treasure.

His love will remain forever.
