Life & Legacy

Michael Dwayne Cooney, affectionately known to many as "Smiley," was born on July 4, 1951, to the late Mae Delois and Claudie Cooney.

On Tuesday, January 20, 2026, while in Carlisle, Arkansas, Michael peacefully transitioned from labor to reward and entered his heavenly home.

A man of unwavering faith, Michael accepted Christ at an early age and lived his life anchored in his belief in the Lord. He was a devoted and active member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church until his health began to fail. Among his many acts of service, Michael proudly served as President of the Mt. Zion MBC Cemetery Committee—a role he cherished deeply, especially the time spent outdoors working alongside friends and fellow servants of the church.

Michael was educated at West Side School in Carlisle, Arkansas. A hardworking and dedicated provider, he spent over 50 years as a professional truck driver and also worked many years on the farm. His leadership extended into the community, where he faithfully served as President of the Short Horn Deer Club for more than 20 years.

Above all else, Michael was a family man. He was an extraordinary father, a loving pawpaw, and a proud great-pawpaw. He treasured time spent with those he loved and found joy in the simple, everyday moments—especially playing cards with his beloved cousins, Carland and Vicki, until his health no longer allowed.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents; three sons, Jeromy, Cedric Sr., and Marcus Cooney; two sisters, Lisa Dodson and Jackie Williams; and two brothers, Benny Ray and Hampton Cooney.

He leaves to cherish and honor his precious memory his devoted daughter, Monique Cooney; six grandsons, Courtlin and Jermi Buchanan, Yancy and Cedric Jr. (Alyssa) Cooney, Nicholas Barnes, and Kaden Walker; two great-grandchildren, Haven and Cedric III Cooney; his beloved goddaughter, Delisa Smith; two brothers, Clem (Karen) and Charles Cooney; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and dear friends.

The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to their amazing village for the love, support, prayers, and kindness shown during this journey.

Michael Dwayne Cooney lived a life filled with faith, laughter, hard work, and love. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him .
