Obituary

Life & Legacy of Michael Wayne Mitchell

Michael Wayne Mitchell was born on November 6, 1958, in Little Rock, Arkansas, to the late George H. Mitchell and Rosa Marie Mitchell. His life would become one marked by faith, family, dedication, laughter, and a deep desire to protect and care for those he loved.

Michael accepted Christ at an early age and carried his faith with him throughout his life. Affectionately known as “Mike,” he loved God and was never hesitant to share his faith with others. He enjoyed preaching whenever the opportunity presented itself and found great meaning in his name, Michael, which comes from the Hebrew Mikha'el, meaning, “Who is like God?”

Mike possessed a strong and protective spirit. He took great pride in looking after the people and things entrusted to his care. Whether watching over his family, his home, or his property, Mike could always be counted on to keep a watchful eye. His family lovingly remembers him as their own “watchdog,” always concerned about the well-being of those closest to him.

He was also a hardworking and dedicated man. Mike faithfully served as an employee of the State of Arkansas for more than 30 years before retiring. His many years of service reflected the commitment and dependability that characterized his life.

Beyond his work, Mike found his greatest happiness in the simple joys of life and the company of family. He enjoyed singing, playing checkers, laughing, and spending time with those he loved. Family gatherings were especially meaningful to him, and his personality and laughter often made him the life of the party. Although Mike lived a rather quiet and sheltered life, there was never any question about where his heart belonged—his heart belonged to his family.

Mike leaves to cherish his precious memory his daughters, Kanderia Mitchell and Dr. Brittany Mitchell; his granddaughters, Jayda Phillips and Jasmyn Phillips; and his grandsons, Cache Graves and Eli Graves.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George H. Mitchell and Rosa Marie Mitchell; his sister, Carolyn “Kitty” Ann Smith; and his brothers, George Wilfred Mitchell and Frances Eugene Mitchell.

Those who remain to celebrate his life and cherish his memory include his sisters, Rose Thompson, Betty Powell, Carol (Jerry) Smith, Marie (Andre) Turner, and Trudy Gilkey; his brothers, Dale Mitchell, Derrick (Tammy) Mitchell, and Paul Mitchell; along with a host of extended family members, loved ones, and friends whose lives were touched by his presence.

Michael Wayne Mitchell will be remembered as a man who loved God, loved his family, worked faithfully, protected those he loved, and knew how to bring laughter into a room. Though his earthly presence will be deeply missed, the memories he created, the love he shared, and the legacy he leaves behind will continue to live in the hearts of his family for generationstocome.
