Velma
Overton-Oliver
March 22, 1957 – February 19, 2022
Mother Velma Overton-Oliver was born to Liller Tean Williams and Solomon Overton on March 22, 1957, in Bastrop, LA.
Mother Oliver graduated from Bastrop High School in 1974. She studied Education at Northeast Louisiana University. She worked as an educator and administrative assistant in Bonita Elementary School. She later worked for Conagra and Chase Mortgage Company. After relocating to Arkansas, she worked for Maybelline and Remington Arms.
Mother Oliver confessed hope in Christ at an early age. She united with Greater Magnolia Missionary Baptist Church of Bastrop, LA under the leadership of Pastor Louie Wroten. She later united with Smith Temple Church of God in Christ of Bastrop, LA under the leadership of Pastor J.R. Liggins.
Upon relocating to Arkansas, she always stated that something was missing. Mother stated, she had been in search of what she missed from being under the teachings of Pastor Liggins. Mother stated, "Once you have been under Pastor Liggins' teachings, you can't just settle anywhere because you have to be under the anointing."
One evening, she stopped by a church called New Commandment Church of God in Christ in Jacksonville, AR under the leadership of Pastor Eddie L. Miller. She was just there to check it out. Guess what, she joined the very first night! After the service she stated, "I am finally home. I have found what I have been looking for in Arkansas. I can feel the love, and I came to work! I have family and they are coming too, but they just don't know it yet."
Mother was called, anointed, and appointed to serve and lead during her Christian journey. There was never an assignment that mother was too busy to make time for. She always strived to please her Lord. One thing she would often say is, "I'm not worried about man. I'm working to make God happy. If God is pleased, then I am satisfied!"
Mother Oliver was a praying woman who taught others to pray and fellowship with God. She helped many birth their spiritual gifts and grow in God's grace. She was a faithful servant and anointed to get things done. She truly was about her Father's business. If she saw it needed to be done, Mother Oliver was always ready to work. Mother was a woman who strived to make her family, pastor, and church look good, always stating it's not about me.
During her Christian journey, she served and worked faithfully in many areas: Superintendent of Sunday School, Assistant Superintendent of Sunday School, Sunday School Teacher, Choir, Feeding Program, Mentor Program, Outreach, Missions, Deacons' Wives, Nursing Home Ministry, Transportation Ministry, Sick & Shut-In, Mother Board, Pastor's Aide, Hospitality, Vacation Bible School, YPWW, YWCC, Usher Board, and Intercessory Prayer.
Mother Oliver leaves to cherish her memories: Loving husband, Deacon Robert Oliver of Jacksonville, AR; one devoted son, Alvern (Linda) Hodge of Little Rock, AR; three sisters, Lillian (William) Bolden of Jacksonville, AR, Theresa Overton of Sherwood, AR, and Celess Johnson of Tampa, FL; three step-daughters, Rhonda Oliver, Shamekia Oliver, and LaTonya (Glynn) Washington all of Houston, TX; four grandsons, four granddaughters, and three great-grandchildren; one aunt, Selina Jones of Bastrop, LA; one uncle, James Quarles of Bastrop, LA; nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, New Commandment family, and friends.
